Dear junior members,
New Wayfarer sails have arrived – We are very luck to have good friends in the sailing world. Westaway Sails have given us a huge discount and Atlantic Spars have contributed the luff wires for free.
This is good news for the 1st year trainees especially – now we may be able to show you how a sail should look when trimmed.
The rest of you may use the Wayfarers on Tuesdays ( but I think you will find them less fun than the Pico or Topper.)
LECTURETTE
Each new mainsail is worth about £500 so quick reminder about BJSC sails………..sails wear out…..
- Never let a sail drop to the ground – grit causes wear on the surface and people tread on them
- Don’t tread on or sit on or crease a sail – a crease causes permanent damage
- Flogging – we don’t believe in flogging at BJSC! so don’t leave sails flogging (flapping about) – this wears out the cloth very quickly- aim to raise sails and go
- It takes two to pack a sail and do it on the deck – please
- Report any damage– this will goes for all club equipment – we can’t fix things that we don’t know about.
- A bit of care will extend the life of a sail up to 50% - doing jobs well is it’s own reward.
NB – Sail makers, and your competitors, will be very happy if you trash, flog, jump on, scuff, stuff and abuse your own sails – it costs you money and slows your boat.
Best wishes,
Stephen Linley-Shaw
