Brickbat and bouquet - one of each

I was upset by the log book problems on Monday especially for Alice. As you know we have already worked out a way of improving our record keeping and filling in forms.

I received a charming letter/card from Paris and his mum – Sent to us BEFORE he got his award! It is enclosed. I know the sentiment is echoed around the whole club even if not necessarily manifest.
Please read this -
“Dear Steve and everyone else at the BJSC.
I keep saying what a gift you are giving these young people and words are inadequate tools to express my gratitude.
Paris has literally thrived coming down to Brixham on Mondays – you have taken the seed of his enthusiasm and watered and fed it with our time and patience and knowledge and love and it has grown a confidence and a passion in him.
For me coming in the support boat with Ariel I can see why- they can sail and learn to push themselves a bit knowing they are held and overseen by a body of sailors who love what they do and share their love and consequently are the best teachers anyone would wish for. And all the time they are still allowed to be children and have fun and to see through the work it takes! THANK YOU ALL enormously.
Best wishes,
Selby Thomas.”

Doesn’t that give you all a warm glow?
We must get Selby on a safety boat course soon! along with Tim of course

FEVA FUNDING. Exciting news about an exciting boat. See HERE

Devon Community Foundation has just awarded Brixham Junior Sailing Club £2500 towards buying Feva dinghies. This means that the second and third year members, ranging form about 13 to 16 will be able to progress towards a more modern dinghy class with a jennicker.
We received the notification on ?th July from Chris Coote, our fund raising manager, who has been filling in forms for months to get this award. The whole club are delighted – now we will have a slightly hirer insurance bill so the fund raising starts again…

BJSC helps youngsters to sail and is based at Oxen Cove where they have enjoyed the full support of the Brixham Yacht Club for 25 years. Volunteers and experienced dinghy sailors are always welcome to join us on Monday/Tuesday nights. Next years intake can join the waiting list (857591) a long as they can swim fully clothed (not as easy as it sounds).

Meeting of BJSC  Monday Night 19th Jan 2009 @ 7pm BYC.
Hello committee members, volunteers and members (for whome I have an e-mail address)
I hope as many as possible will be able to attend.
AGENDA – just a list from my head……

  • Apologies for absence.
  • Discussion of the 3 Training evenings – sub headings, Shore, Instruction, Safety – we should invite BYC members to contribute to these events.
  • Arrangement for Instructor training with Pete Musket on the water – 3 sessions of coaching and volunteer sailing novices.
  • Recruitment of new intake.
  • Social evening discussed previously maybe before the induction night? Log books handed out etc.
  • Hardware – boats and equipment update.
  • Separate race time allocated so we can invite more dinghy sailors to join our club? Not so much safety cover required with more experienced members – instructors could even enjoy racing.
  • Funding.
  • Fencing party to contain OUR bit of compound.
  • The need for record keeping and management – especially keeping up to date with our instruction certs etc. Needs a volunteer to take on this role!
  • Anything else…...

As usual I shall try to keep the meeting brisk so come with ideas prepared if you have any.

Hope to finish within 80 minutes and have time for a chat in the bar afterwards.

Especial thanks to Adrian for preparing/repairing our new RIB, Mark Hobbs for bosun duties, BYC bosun, Chris Coot looking for funds this winter, Tim for website www.brixhamjsc.co.uk

Glad to see that Lynn Fitzgerald is recuperating and look forward to her taking on some light duties soon. Happy new year to you all……..
