MINUTES OF BRIXHAM
JUNIOR SAILING CLUB MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 29th
SEPTEMBER 2008
PRESENT Pete Musket Steve Linley-Shaw Pete Marshall Tim Corbett Chris Cootes Mark Hobbs Adrian Fricker Mike Inness

MATTERS ARISING
Steve advised that 12 cadets had gained their certificates through the
link with Churston Grammar School thanks to Pete
Musket.
It is a hope and aim that Brixham College will also participate and
Pete Musket is pushing this with his contacts at the school.
Adrian pointed out that people were not really aware of BJSC and that
perhaps the club could be advertised more.
The limitations of number of instructors will restrict numbers. More
instructors would be a benefit.
Pete Musket pointed out that the BJSC and the BYC were separate and a
greater link socially would be helpful.
It was suggested that one Monday evening parents might see the progress
of the Cadets from the water by being on board Shuttle.
Having a second night for racing only was discussed where one safety boat
to ten Cadets would be possible (with race officer RIB) with fewer instructors
required. This extra night would allow
emphasis on racing and techniques. This
could be either a Tuesday or Wednesday.
All could be emailed for preferred night and availability.
Mike commented that this years sailing had been the best to date and
recognition should be given to Steve for his continued efforts, not forgetting
the help given by all the other volunteers.
2) Fund Raising
Raising funds by arranging a social fun night was discussed but concern
was raised with the large amount of these currently at BYC. This idea was unresolved.
An alternative night for the Cadets maybe on a Friday or Saturday was
considered.
It was noted the R.N.L.I. race with Cadets on the club members’ yachts
was a great success and should be repeated.
Adrian suggested an evening where the Cadets get a ride on the RIB
around the Bay followed by sausage & chips in the club.
It was suggested the Cadets meet in the club following sailing sessions
to encourage and integrate parents into the club.
3) Working Party
With crane out of the yachts being on the 18th October,
moving of the boats was arranged for Saturday 11th October at 9am.
4) Skills Improvement
Steve suggested that throughout the winter skills improvement evenings
(Mondays) be arranged focusing on specific subjects.
5) RYA Funding
Steve & Pete mentioned that £100 is available to the volunteers in
recognition of their efforts which could be spent on something of their
choice. It was suggested a beer evening
after a Monday night skills improvement.
Pete to forward relevant form to Steve for completion
and submission.
6) Grant Aid
Chris Cootes advised of two possible options
but needed information from Steve regarding the club Health & safety
details.
7) New Boats
If any monies were forthcoming the club needs to decide what to spend
the money on. Another
RIB or new boats?
Pete Musket advised the latest favoured boats in the bay were RS Feva. These have an
asymmetric spinnaker and need two crew but can be sailed single handed with
just the main. An alternative could be
the Topaz Omega, which would be equivalent to the Wayfarer.
To be agreed.
