MATTERS ARISING

1) Induction Night

It was agreed this would be Monday 14th April 2008.

It was agreed that only the new first year students would attend with the second year students paying fees prior to this date.

As a temporary measure Kevin Wright kindly agreed to cover for Lynn Fitzgerald until her return.

Prize Giving:

It was agreed that this years prize giving would be on Saturday 6th September 2008. This is to be an all day event to include sailing and a BBQ.

Mike to suggest a programme of events for the day.

Programme:

The draft programme was agreed with sessions 1 & 2 to prepare for season and agree format / details.

It was suggested formalising what the students achieve / have achieved, with a

de-briefing immediately after returning to shore, then de-rigging.

2) Instructor Course

Duncan West an RYA Instructor would be starting the five day dinghy instructor course on Saturday 16th February. (It was unable to run this before Christmas due to bad weather). Kurt from Grenville House will be making the final assessment on Sunday 2nd March with four volunteers required all day from 10am until 6pm.

The volunteers are:

Roger Dodgson

Scott Marsden

Trudi

Leigh

3) State of Boats

There is doubt the Wayfarers will pass the buoyancy test. If not it would be possible to fibreglass the stern buoyancy tanks to make them watertight. (However access is needed to the rudder pintles). It was agreed the catches should initially be screwed down to secure them prior to the start of the season.

Boats need to be checked for sharp edges as these can cause annoying injuries to children.

It was suggested one Wayfarer at a time be re-furbished in the sail loft. This could be carried out by the Bosun’s mate.

It was suggested there be a working party to carry out the above on Saturday 12th April.

(Post minute note: A lot of these items have now been attended to as part of the Instructors course, including fitting of tiller extensions).

Purchasing renewals:

Four tiller extensions have been purchased and need to be fitted.

4) RIB

Steve Linley-Shaw advised a new RIB could be purchased with BYC plus sponsorship.

A 4.5 metre Avon RIB would be in the order of £8,000 with a 5.3 metre Avon RIB being around £11,000. The club has a motor available.

Sponsorship:

It was suggested that local companies such as Gliddons be contacted to see what possibilities there are. Steve Davies to make contact.

Fred Farmer to contact Dave Curbain.

The requirement is for a RIB of around 5 metres in length with a lightweight aluminium trailer.

5) Churston Grammar School

Ashley Mc Nally and Charlotte Haigh are contacts.

They would like to use the BJSC facilities on a Tuesday (After school club) & Thursday pm starting the 1st May and running for eight weeks. Pete Musket and Matt (sailing Instructor) to run this with twelve 14-15 year old students. They would be transferred by mini-bus.

Tuesday evenings would run from 29th April until the 24th June. Thursday’s would run from 1.30 until 4.30, leaving before the yacht club racing commenced.

Regarding insurance, students would be covered if they became members of BJSC, which was agreed.

The longer term aim was to include Brixham school, which could evolve into races between students.

There would need to be a handover session to show where keys are kept and equipment stored etc.

It was confirmed that there would be no buoyancy aids available from BJSC.

6) Brixham College

It was noted that there could be an after school session for Brixham students but this would have to be on Wednesday evenings but this could be difficult. To be considered further and advised.

7) Log Books

Roger to contact Lynn regarding last years intake who didn’t finish the course due to lack of wind.

There needs to be consideration regarding how they can complete the course.

Peter to purchase 24 log books for last year and this year.

8) Selling Outboard

Steve Linley-Shaw advised he had been offered £350 for the long shaft 8hp outboard.

It was suggested advertising in the “Boats & Outboards” magazine to see if a better price could be obtained.

9) Lynn Fitzgerald

It was agreed that Roger should buy flowers for Lynn, for which the club would reimburse.

Any Other business

Pete Musket advised there was an “On Board Festival” at Paignton Sailing Club on Saturday 7th June for students that have just passed. There are to be fun races at £5 per student. Pete to provide details later.
