ABOUT the CLUB

Brixham Junior Sailing Club was formed in 1989 by Steve Linley-Shaw and a group of dedicated volunteer members of Brixham Yacht Club. The club shows youngsters the joys of sailing & teaches them how to do it properly ……. we hope they will gain a love of the sea for life…..they certainly have lasting memories of achievement and fun.

The club is manned totally bt volunteers - no one is paid. RYA Instructors have CRB checks and safety boat drivers are qualified by the Royal Yachting Association. The club is a recognised RYA Training Centre and is an Onboard Club.

Beginners, 11 years or older, learn to sail in large Wayfarer dinghies with an instructor on each boat. Most gain RYA level 2 qualifications after 12 Monday night sessions. We can only train 12 youngsters each year so please contact the club on the website to go on the waiting list.

Second year students make use of the club’s Picos: instructors are present at all times in nearby safety boats. Coaching improves sailing skills.

Third years and all competent sailors can then take part in Tuesday night fun races in two handed Pico’s and single handed Topper dinghies or their own boats.

Training sessions finish in July but we continue each week till September. Each year BJSC members are encouraged to have go at helming yachts on the special RNLI charity race held by BYC.  This is a great event and the highlight of the sailing year. There is a modest annual subscription to make the sport accessible to most families. Members enjoy the use of club boats during sessions, qualified instruction and the BYC changing rooms. Parents may use the club, by booking in, during sessions – Why not enjoy a meal and drink and the best view in the bay? Finally we expect some involvement from parents and trust that you will want to do something during the season to help the charity to achieve it’s goals. Non Sailing families are particularly welcome, many get qualified to drive a safety boat or just pull trolleys up the slipway.
