Sailing/ Training Programme for 2011
This may be ammended as the season progresses

TRAINING

Tuesdays - Tackers -  1st years. Sail in Wayfarers initially with an instructor. As experience is gained they may sail a wayfarer without an instructor or move into a Pico or Topper. The course will teach the fundamentals of sailing.

Tuesdays    Intermediate. Preference for boats will be given to 2nd year trainees on Tuesdays – others may come. They will sail Topper or Pico either solo or in pairs. The course will refresh the basics of sailing and also some of the finer points of getting more speed and sailing efficiently. This will be done using a variety of ‘on the water’ exercises intended to build confidence. Students will be trained in racing techniques - how to get a good start, going round marks, rules etc. A short race may be organised to practice.

One session in July is designated ‘Spare’. This will be used if sailing has to be cancelled on any of the scheduled Tuesdays.

Training Notes

In an attempt to get on the water earlier please try to arrive 30 minutes before the session start time and either get changed or help rig the boats – preferably both.

RACING

Mondays – Competent sailors. Second year + students and club members. You will be expected to be able handle a Pico or Topper (i.e. sail round a course) single-handed and without the need for instruction. Help and tuition may be given on the water to improve sailing and enjoyment of the sport. Emphasis is very much on FUN with a competitive element so don’t be afraid to give it a try. Prizes will be awarded.

Racing Notes- read carefully as many races are lost by crews who do not read the instructions.

Monday nights you must get to the green flag by RACE start at 6:30pm. You need arrive at about 5:30pm to allow time to rig and sail to the green flag.

Racing is very informal and friendly (to the extent that Race Officers may offer guidance to slower sailors at their discretion). Courses will be short and easy to understand.

Racing is open to any BJSC club member (adult family members too) with basic sailing skills i.e. able to sail a triangular course.

If time allows a 2nd race will start immediately after 1st race has finished

You may use club Toppers, Picos, Wayfarers or your own dinghy.

Racing is only open to novice (first year) sailors if they can find an experienced sailor to go with them.

Courses will be set and described by the race officer once you are on the water.

You must inform the race officer of your intention to race at least 5 minutes before the start.

Social Secretary

This could be you!

Volunteers needed……..

The committee is currently looking for a 'social secretary'. Each year we try to run at least one social event in order to promote the 'club' atmosphere of BJSC (and maybe raise some money for the club at the same time). In previous years we have often failed to do this simply due to lack of volunteer effort.

The task would involve liaising with BYC to ensure we can have use of the facilities and then planning and organising the event itself.

If you feel you would like to get involved then please contact one of the committee members above.

Staff shortages can alter the programme -  hope you will understand that we will do our best..
