The words of the classic musical came flooding back to haunt Brixham Roads as the worlds leading Sonatas assembled off Battery Point last Thursday for what was to be the ultimate showdown in international yacht racing. With the two leading contenders level on points there could be only one winner. This race would decide who would carry the title of Sonata World Series  Champion into 2010.

Unprecedented banner waving crowds lined the waterfront cheering and chanting. Four Coots and a Piano were clearly the crowds favourites. Huge seas piled in from the east. The fleet pitched and tossed awaiting the start and at 18.30 precisely they were off.

The Piano and Blues played cat and mouse throughout the first lap with Simply Alto (the Coot mobile) in close contention. The lead changed almost at every mark until the crew of Blues breaker ,finally setting aside the massive hangovers which had afflicted them since the Simon and Sarah wedding decided to open a bottle of The Don (Don Darias fine wines and cleaning products of Seville). The brain numbing properties of this classic wine ensured that the mistakes which had characterised the first round were eliminated in the second and Bluesbreaker pulled ahead to win by 30 seconds.

It was probably the best race of the season. Although disappointed the gallant crew of the Piano were gracious in their congratulations as befits the most gentlemanly series in world yachting.

Next season promises to be even better with at least six Sonatas taking part- and perhaps one or two more. Events to look forward to are the annual prize giving and the World Series 2 A.G.M.
